What is a Blusher Wedding Veil?
If you’re on the search for your perfect wedding veil, you will probably come across the word ‘blusher’ a lot. But what exactly does the term mean and do you have to wear one? In this blog, we’ll tell you everything you need to know about the iconic blusher veil!
What is a Blusher?
A blusher is a part of a wedding veil that covers the bride’s face as she walks down the aisle. Adding an air of mystery and romance to the occasion, the blusher is then lifted to reveal the bride's radiant face, making for some gorgeous photo opportunities during the wedding ceremony.
The History of Blusher Veils
Blusher veils are a fantastic way to add a touch of traditional romance to any bridal style. Its origins can be found in stories, myths, legends and of course, the history book, and can be traced back as far as the Ancient Greeks and Romans.
There are many stories and theories behind the origins and popularity of the blusher. In some cultures, it was used to protect the bride from evil spirits or signify modesty and purity. In other parts of the world, where arranged marriages are common, they were used to hide the bride’s appearance from the groom until they were officially married. In Judaism, the veiling of the bride signifies that the groom loves her for more than her outer beauty.
In the present day, blushers don’t need to hold the weight of the meaning they have gathered over the years. Instead, they are a stunning and dramatic accessory which pays homage to wedding traditions of the past while offering brides the opportunity to showcase their style and create a show stopping wedding day look.
What is the Difference Between a Veil and a Blusher?
A veil with a blusher is a type of veil most commonly referred to as a two-tier veil. This means that, as well as the traditional length of tulle cascading down a bride’s shoulders and back, there is also another length of tulle which can be pulled over the bride’s face. This length of delicate fabric is known as the blusher.
Veils which don’t include a blusher are sometimes known as single tier veils.
To Blusher or Not To Blusher?
Wedding fashion has most certainly evolved with the times and, nowadays, single tier veils are just as popular as blusher veils. Whether you choose to wear one or not depends entirely on your personal preferences and chosen wedding gown.
In our opinion, the only reason you should wear a blusher veil is if you choose to. Not because it feels traditional or like you must!
Here at Lace & Favour, we love it when brides are true to their own style and own it on their big day, whether that be traditional, contemporary, glamorous, or quirky!
Who Should Lift The Blusher?
If you’ve chosen to wear a blusher veil for your big day, you’re probably wondering who should lift the blusher when you reach the end of the aisle. Traditionally, it is the father of the bride who lifts the blusher as part of ‘giving her away’. But it doesn’t have to be that way! Instead, brides can choose another person of significance, such as a parent, best friend, or even your husband either before or after you exchange your vows.
While weddings are steeped in tradition, in our modern world there are no rules as to who does this for you or when it happens. If you’re having a religious ceremony, you may wish to discuss this with your officiant and hear their suggestions. But at the end of the day, the choice is yours only.
If your veil is quite long and may be difficult to lift, you could ask your maid of honour to help or even do it for you. Or, if you’d prefer, you can lift the blusher yourself. There’s no right or wrong way of doing this at all!
