How To Wear a Veil
Once you’ve found the perfect veil to complete your bridal look, the next step is figuring out how to wear it! From romantic updos intertwined with flowers to the classic low chignon, there are a range of beautiful hairstyles to choose from. Typically your bridal hair stylist will be able to help you to find a look which leaves you looking and feeling radiant on your special day. In the meantime however, we’re on hand to share some helpful tips and tricks on how to wear a veil with different bridal hair styles, from cascading over gorgeous loose waves to being secured in an elegant updo. We’ll also offer some tips on how to wear a veil with a tiara too - so let’s get started!
How to Wear a Veil with Your Hair Down
If you envision yourself as a hair down kind of bride, you may be wondering how you go about securing a wedding veil in place. If so, look no further. We’ve drawn upon all of our expertise to bring you the best tips for wearing a veil with your hair down for the big day.
At Lace & Favour, a large majority of our veils come with a comb attached. These combs are curved and feature loops which follow the shape of the head and allow them to grip your hair more easily. A top concern for a lot of brides looking to achieve the perfect ‘down do’ with a veil is securing it, as there isn’t as much opportunity to nestle the comb when your hair isn’t tied up. But it is achievable, and to stunning effect, too! Here are our tips to help you…
1. Backcomb Your Hair
Our first tip is to backcomb the section of hair underneath where the veil will sit. Doing so will make your hair thicker, giving the comb for the veil more to grip on to. To do this, simply lift the section of hair where you would like the veil to sit and backcomb the section underneath. You can do this with a brush or fine-tooth comb, starting halfway between your roots and your hand, firmly brushing downwards towards the scalp. When you’re done backcombing, just smooth out the top section with a brush, using light pressure to hide the backcombed sections. You should then be able to nestle the comb into the backcombed section of hair and secure it with one or two hair grips.
2. Consider a Half-Up, Half-Down Style
If you’d like a bit of extra security, you can always try a half up, half down style. This kind of hairstyle is fantastic for boho brides and woodland weddings, as it looks very romantic and ethereal. To do this, simply take two sections of hair on either side and bring them together to create a small ponytail. Once secured with a hair band, you can insert the comb of the veil into the gathered ponytail for better grip. You could even shake up this style by plaiting each section of hair before bringing them together into a ponytail, which will create two delicate braids!
If you’d like to hide the ponytails for a sleeker down do, try lifting the top layer of hair and creating the ponytails underneath. In doing this you can thicken the hair up but smooth over the top section and nestle the comb down into the ponytails beneath.
3. Use Plenty of Hair Pins
A lot of brides think that, with a down do, they should use as little hair accessories as possible. But that’s really not the case. When your hair is loose, it gives less grip for a comb. Therefore, in some cases, it’s really helpful to use hair pins to secure the comb and hair in place, especially if you’re planning on wearing your veil all day!
Other hair accessories can also be used to secure your veil, including hair vines. These beautiful, delicate additions not only look stunning but can work wonders to give you that little bit of added security. Or, if you’re not keen on using plain hair pins, why not consider a few well-placed embellished hair pins with floral details and embellishments for a little extra sparkle?
How to Wear a Wedding Veil with Hair Up
Wearing a veil with your hair up can create a stunning and elegant look that is sure to turn heads. Whether you opt for a classic updo or a more modern ponytail, we'll share some tips and tricks to ensure that your veil is the perfect finishing touch to your wedding day look.
If you’ve yet to choose your veil but you’re set on wearing your hair up, we recommend considering a veil that attaches with a comb or pins. A cathedral or fingertip veil can look especially stunning with an updo. If you're longing for a more vintage vibe, then a birdcage veil is sure to add a chic and retro feel.
Again, your hairstylist will be able to work their magic to create a gorgeous hairstyle for you but in the meantime, here are a few of our favourite options for pairing an updo with a veil.
A Sleek Bun
Super timeless, a sleek bun looks beautiful with a veil, whether it's placed at the crown of your head or at the nape of your neck. Add in some delicate hair accessories, such as hair pins or a sparkly bridal comb for that extra special touch.
A Romantic Updo
We’re picturing soft curls, twists, and braids, all elegantly gathered on top of your head. This type of hairstyle pairs perfectly with a veil, adding a touch of femininity to your bridal look.
The Messy Bun
For all the boho chic brides out there, the messy bun is perfect for giving off some real chill vibes, all whilst looking absolutely gorgeous. Messy buns work perfectly with veils, effortlessly creating a whimsical look and feel.
No matter which style you choose, your hairstylist should be able to help you to figure out the best placement for your veil and also recommend the right accessories needed to ensure that it stays secure all day long.
How to Wear a Veil with a Tiara
Ever since the beautiful Kate Middleton said “I do” to Prince William in a stunning Cartier design, wedding tiaras have been rising in popularity. These traditional accessories are often associated with royalty and princesses, and so can bring a sense of grandeur and formality to proceedings.
If you’ve always dreamed of wearing a tiara coupled with a sweeping veil on your big day, you’re probably wondering how to layer the two to stunning effect. If so, look no further! Here at Lace & Favour, we’re obsessed with helping brides to achieve the wedding look they’ve pictured since they were little girls and we’ve got the tips and tricks you need to get this combo en pointe with ease!
How Do You Wear a Bridal Tiara?
Bridal tiaras look amazing paired with all kinds of hair styles. They can be worn either at the front of the head, for a crown-like finish, or further back like a hair band. They can also work to stunning effect when paired with either single tier or two tier veils!
The first thing to consider when wearing a tiara is how far forwards or back you wear it. Ideally, a tiara should sit on the crown of your head. Too far forwards and it can look a little bit odd. Too far back and it might not have the impact you want!
How Do You Wear A Tiara with a Veil?
Wearing a tiara and a veil is quite simple. Once your hair is styled, you simply need to slip the tiara into position and nestle the comb on the veil down into your hair. It really is that easy! We would recommend using hair pins to secure the veil, just to ensure that it’s secure. Your tiara too should sit flat on the head, with the sides tucked into your hair so they’re not visible.
Can You Wear a Tiara with a Two-Tier Veil?
Absolutely! Two-tier wedding veils feature a section of tulle known as the ‘blusher’ which can either be swept back or worn over the face. To achieve this look, you should make sure both the tiara and veil are firmly in place before pulling the blusher forward over the tiara.
Do All Veils Come with Combs Attached?
At Lace & Favour, all our veils come with a comb attached, with the exception of some of our cap veils which do not require a comb.
